Ways To Keep Teeth Healthy This Winter Holidays

Spending time with loved ones during the holidays can be enjoyable. However, the holidays can also take a toll on the health of your teeth if you are not careful. Here are some tips on how to keep your teeth healthy during the holidays:

Maintain a Good Oral Hygiene Regimen

By following a good oral hygiene routine, you can prevent cavities and tooth decay. To maintain a healthy mouth, you must brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Brushing removes plaque from your teeth, which, if left untreated, will eventually turn into tartar and eventually cause gum disease. Flossing also helps remove debris from between the teeth and along the gum line. Additionally, you should visit your dentist at least once every six months for a checkup and cleaning. Talk to your dentist about other preventative therapies, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants. These can help protect teeth from bacteria and decay.

Avoid Sugary Drinks and Foods

Holiday gatherings often include sugary treats like cookies, cakes, candy, and sweets. These foods and drinks can stick to your teeth and promote tooth decay. Try to avoid sticky or hard candies that linger in your mouth for a long time. If you do indulge in these treats, try to brush your teeth after mealtimes and wait thirty minutes before going back for more treats.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly For Professional Cleanings

Winters bring with them cold and flu season, so it is important to protect your body by getting plenty of sleep and washing your hands frequently. However, you should also be sure to protect your smile by scheduling regular cleanings and checkups with your dentist. During the holiday season, it is especially important to stay on track with your oral care routine because bacteria are more easily spread at this time of year. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Also, floss daily and use mouthwash to kill any remaining plaque that brushing alone won’t remove.

Besides these at-home practices, you should visit the dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup. During your visit, you will be treated to a thorough professional cleaning from your dentist, as well as x-rays to detect any early signs of decay or disease. These visits allow your dentist to catch any problems in their early stages so you can avoid cavities or other issues altogether.

Use a Mouth Guard if You Play Sports

Using a mouth guard for sports or activities where your mouth may get hit or injured will help prevent tooth damage. If you’re unsure whether or not you need a mouth guard, ask your dentist at your next appointment. They can help you decide if you need extra protection and what type of mouth guard is best for you.
