How Can You Look After Your Teeth This Thanksgiving

Posted by 4TH AND MORRIS DENTISTRY on Nov 22 2022, 03:06 AM

Thanksgiving is a time for celebrating with friends and family. However, Thanksgiving can also be a stressful holiday if you are not prepared. You have likely been brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day since you were a child, but you still need to keep on top of your oral health routine at Thanksgiving and other times of celebration when indulgences are higher. Here are some simple tips to follow to make sure your mouth stays healthy during this time of year.

Make sure you eat smart throughout the day. Remember that it’s not really about the big meal in the middle of the day; it’s about all of the little snacks that you eat all day long. Stick with healthier options such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and unsalted nuts. If your holiday includes alcohol, try to drink in moderation and consider alternating alcoholic beverages with water. This will help reduce the likelihood of dry mouth as well as cleanse your palette between drinks.

Brushing is still important after eating as well. Try to brush within 30 minutes of eating to help reduce the possibility of cavities. If you can’t brush directly after a meal, rinsing with water can help dislodge food particles from teeth.

Don’t forget to floss too! No matter how thorough you are with your brushing technique, the truth is that you cannot reach every nook and cranny of your teeth with a toothbrush. Flossing daily helps to remove plaque and food trapped between the teeth and along the gum line so that you can avoid gum disease and tooth decay.

Holidays are often a very busy time of the year when there’s little time for rest and relaxation. Be sure to schedule your routine dental cleanings and exams beforehand so that you don’t need to worry about making appointments on the spot. Keep your oral health a priority this Thanksgiving so you can keep on smiling all holiday season long.
